A Teachers as Scholars Travel Seminar:

Literature & Landscape: The Wordsworths and The Lake District

June 25-July 2, 2023

Grasmere & Lake

The Seminar: The primary focus of this one-week course, based at the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere, England, is two-fold: to study the complementary relationship between Dorothy Wordsworth’s journaling and William Wordsworth’s poetry, particularly during their years (1799-1808) at Dove Cottage, and to explore the Lake District landscape that infuses the Wordsworths’ writing. Course participants will maintain a journal during the week and required readings will include selections from Dorothy’s Grasmere Journals, Wordsworth poems from Lyrical Ballads (1798-1805), and the Two-Part Prelude of 1799. Participants will also be encouraged to read the thirteen-book Prelude of 1805. Regular walks and hikes in the Grasmere area (some optional) will require participants to be reasonably fit and mobile. Participants will earn 25 PDPs for the course.

Seminar Leaders: This seminar is organized by Tom Andrew, a recently retired Moses Brown English teacher, who looks forward to sharing his passion and experience with the Lake District and the Wordsworths. The main instructors of the course will be Jeff Cowton, Principal Curator and Head of Learning at Wordsworth Grasmere, and Catherine Kay, Education & Outreach Officer at the Trust. Participants will have access to the Wordsworth Museum and Dove Cottage, as well as its Garden-Orchard and woodland throughout the seminar.

Tuition: $3,200. The tuition covers a welcome dinner before the trip, lodging, Wordsworth programming, a full-day excursion to Ullswater, a closing reception and dinner, and all but two meals. The tuition does not cover flights and train/bus transfers to Grasmere.

Lodging: As most rooms are for two adults, this is a perfect trip to take with a traveling companion, or for those willing to share a twin-bedded room with another participant.
